I've had a similar invasion with centipedes, which was no fun! I've heard there are some new poisons out there can decimate the colony when one ant brings the poison back to the nest... might be something to look into unless you have a lot of pets roaming around.

In Aust there are some parts which constantly suffer from millipede invasions.
I even read a report that someone in Tassie was having problems with them and that is something we don't normally have. Adelaide is known for it's millipede invasions and has been for years. This link shows how bad they can get. I *think* it's from a place in Victoria. We have tried the poison that is supposed to go back to the nest to kill the queen, but it didn't seem to work. The problem is that Hobart was built on top of one big ant colony ... there are several different types of ants and wherever you go there's ants and it's not just summer, it's right through winter as well. You can't stand anywhere in the back yard without having them crawling over your feet. We have 2 dogs so we do worry about poisons around the house but there are these things called Ant Bombs which is like an aerosol can and you stand it upright and press the nozzle and it showers the contents up and around, like one of those fireworks .... we put one in every room and also up in the roof cavity, then we go out for about 4 hours. When you return there is no smell and they do work too! Other than that we could get the pest controller in and we did that once and it worked really good for about 3 years ... and the dogs appear to be none the worse for it .... But it's pretty much an ongoing battle with the critturs and building a moat, like graph offered, is not as silly as it sounds, except for these ants. |

That millipede trap is brilliant, I can't believe how many that guy was dealing with, absolutely disgusting.
Our winters are severe enough to take care of many common insect pets, (with the exception of the house centipede) so it makes sense that the ants are an on going battle for you, being that the colonies are so intricate. that ant bridge is awesome... it amazes me how these things can orchestrate that without verbal communication, especially that they are lower functioning organisms. Ants appear to be fairly altruistic.
